i got my clear/red colossus off the truck 2 days ago. It is time to start it. I turned it on,,,13 minutes later the bulb blew.

Bulb from LL is a phillips 250w heat lamp BR40.It says "clear" on the box, but actually has a white covering over the top.

I went to lowes and bought a syvania 250w heat lamp. It really is clear on top. As i was walking away,,,I saw the red  250w heat lamps. Hmmmm,,, i have  red lava. I bought it.

I put it in and measured it with the heat gun,,,, 272 degrees!!!!!   I turned it down to approx 50% and installed the globe. I should have hit it with the heat gun for temp,,,but didn't as i was to much in a hurry and forgot.

Do you guys run heat lamps in yours?

OMG! DON'T use a heat lamp it will crack your globe! Heat lamps get MUCH HOTTER than regular bulbs of the same size and wattage!

that is what LL sent with the lamp,,,, a 250 watt heat lamp

Oh wow...a red one? I was given a 200w r40 spot light. That's odd.

The base was re-designed to accept the 250w bulb the socket holder has been lowered. I would give LL a call and let them know that the lamp arrived but the bulb arrived broken and a new one is needed. Once they send you another bulb then it would be time to order a few from LL and keep the receipt. If in the future you have a globe problem and LL asks if you were using there bulb you will have the receipt. I would stay with LL until you find the exact bulb as a backup.

James, the one LL sent was NOT red. I put the red one in. It is hard to put into words how it looks with that red bulb lighting up red lava!

It is flowing right now.

Bohdan, i already emailed LL and received confirmation that the red bulb is ok to run. I was told the bulb has no warranty and I would have to get a replacement myself,,which is why the red bulb ended up in there. Susan told me they buy their bulbs from Home Depot.

It has been running since friday afternoon at 50% on the dimmer. It has surpassed all my expectations,,,,by a ways.  My wife even smiled at it once,,and she doesn't like lava lamps at all.  I want 26 more of them,,,,,,,,

That is great to hear about the lamp. Looks like 50% is working with the 250w bulb. On the older ones 75% would work great when running the 200w Bulb. The wax on the Colossus is very soft so they heat up fast and will overheat if you start them up at full blast. The Colossus loves to start up slowly and then adjust as needed to keep it at the point below overheating it. Also if the globe overheats many times from doing a full start up and letting it run big time the coil will begin to fail.

Do you have photos?

I shut it down at 43 hours. I won't be around for a couple days and don't want to risk letting it run yet. I want to see how long it takes to fire up at the 50% setting anyway. My first startup was at 100% per LL instructions in email.
