Bohdan that is definately an amazing find , you are very lucky to own a #1 Flock : )
  • George

Would of been great to get your hands on a set , they must be rarer than the Flock itself!
  • Bohdan

What the coils look like. They came with a screen type coil.

No dimmer on this lamp it is an on/off switch. All of my flocks have been converted to USA standards.

I've always wanted a Mathmos lava lamp & have tried to make an order on their website. But they're not prepared to send them worldwide & suggest some really silly things about handling their lava lamps. Which have been proven to be wrong on many occasions & I'm left wondering if it's an attempt to stop the used lava lamp market. I've got a R1 Fireflow amongst other lamps & can only buy Mothmos lamps on eBay. Guess what...

...they have all arrived safely with no damage plus they have been laid down on their side. Even when the wax becomes dislodged in the bottle it eventually melts again & flows perfectly.

The problem here is that Mathmos yrs ago when the world wide contract was up with LW China did not finalize this important agreement so LW and now LL China can once again sell world wide but Mathmos is once again limited to where they can sell there lamps. They cannot and will never be able to sell direct to the U.S.A and other areas. We use to buy direct from Electric Planet out of the UK but they had a falling out with Mathmos and sales ended.

Hi John, As Bohdan says it is really a trademark issue or legal issue. Lava has free reign over the USA and the rest of the world is Mathmos. Although Lava sell their cheap Chinese lamps in Europe too.

  • John

That's a real shame because in my opinion Mathmos are the pick of what's available new & this will limit what I have from them. I can get them from other places online but the mark up on them is so rediculous that it'll never happen for me. I'd really love a Telstar Rocket & a Heritage Astro but need to find a way of getting them here.

Hi John have you tried ordering from the Australian Mathmos website?

    http://www.mathmos.com.au/home.php

You could always shoot an email to jamie.king@skymesh.com.au and ask if he is able to post to NZ.

  • John

lol, I didn't even know it existed until now but unfortunately they don't do what I was after due to limited options. Thanks for the VERY kind offer, I may take you up on it in future.

O.K. After looking for quite some time on different websites for Mathmos lamps & listings on eBay. The first Mathmos electric lava lamp will shortly start making its way here. It's an orange Mathmos Glitter Baby Lava Lamp boxed & unused from a private seller on eBay who was kind enough to add the buy it now price. Have always wanted one of their orange lamps & Ive read many times how much people like the glitter baby types of lamp. So when the new/unused lamp became available it was a relatively easy decision. One thing I've noticed about eBay is either things are priced well to sell, priced $0.99 to get rid of & the rest have insanely rediculous prices that'll probably never sell. I'm a staff nurse working in mental health so I tend to question their grasp on reality & wonder what non prescription substances they're taking. As I've done well at selling vintage remote control off-roaders in the past & always at a low reserve. Which might be how I continue to fund the lava lamp collection in future & free up shelf space at the same time. Are currently looking at 110V step down transformers with US power plugs. So that getting a lava lamp from the USA becomes an option for the future. At least with the Mathmos lamps all I have to do is swap over the power plug safely & it's good to go. I've already got an icecream container full of new replacement plugs ready to go & I'm sure I'll find a lava lamp for each one of them eventually.

Decided that the glitter lamp isn't really my thing although it's quite nice to look at. Found another bottle (blue/blue) which apparently has been discontinued to swap out the glitter one. Have also now ended up with another Astro baby (blue/green) because no one outbid me. Have just stuck to buying new lamps as even the second hand ones are being sold for really good money. Would really like an Astro next preferably violet/orange or possibly violet/red but are in no rush & don't want to upset the cook by spending too much on them. When I've got the two together I'll get some decent pictures to share & possibly throw the Fireflow in the mix. I'm not going to buy many more Mathmos lamps as I'd be quite happy with just the one of each type. But will keep looking...
  • Bohdan

The Blue-Blue and Orange-violet are great lamps to own bought a few of them yrs ago and they still run great.

  • John

I guess someone decided I needed an Astro also as a new one was listed in the exact colour combination I'm after. The only thing wrong with it is that it doesn't have a lightbulb & I'll have to find one to make it go. Already have a couple of icecream containers full of bulbs so hopefully I've already got one. Just checked the Mathmos site & it would have to be something different. I've got the same type of bulb at the moment but it's only a 25W & will have to look for something more. I do have the 30W bulb that goes into the Astrobaby is there any reason it shouldn't be used in an Astro?
  • John

Am I correct in thinking an Astro with an Astrobaby bulb might take forever to heat up & mightn't be able to reach the optimum temperature? I've also got a 40w bulb of the same type that goes into the Astrobaby. It is physically a bit larger in shape so not sure if it'll fit into an Astro. Are probably going to have to trial different bulbs if I can't get any genuine Mathmos bulbs & Mathmos Australia has none in stock. If there's anyone within England who is willing to help & has PayPal. I'd love to get a few of the correct bulbs for this lamp & keep it 100% original.
