The liquid used in this lamp is petroleum base and the wax is very soft which is why Vintage Lava Lite used a 30w reflector bulb for them at the time and they are very hard to find. A 40w Reflector can be used along with a dimmer to keep the lamp from overheating. Was any other type of liquid added to this globe if so it has had a bad reaction to the old formula. The only way to correct this problem would be to locate and older Mathmos and just use the whole globe as is. You will be able to unscrew the white cap and it will re-screw on to the Mathmos large mouth vase. The newer Mathmos lamps now have a smaller screw on cap.
