The Older and newer style - they both have different characteristics - the 3-leg lamp heats up much quicker but lets out heaps of light from the open-style base. I got both of these lamps this week, one from a market and one from Gumtree!

I love the three legged design. It's really beautiful. We had one of these, in red, at my grandparents' place in around 1999/2000 when lava lamps were becoming cool again. We bought it from the local Target store. I just wish I knew what happened to it. At the time we knew it wasn't an original brand lava lamp (i.e. Mathmos) but looking back and thinking about it I think it's a beautiful design and was of high quality. I'm glad to have found pictures online as it brought back a lot of memories. I remember being up late in the living room looking at it's eerie yet soothing red glow! Nannie and Grandad were from England and said it reminded them of the 60's in England when lava lamps were new and trendy.

Great photo of 2 destined to be Classic Lava lamps. On the 3 leg versions some had the leg set on with screws and others had Metal Rivets.

Beautiful! I love them both but my favourite is the one on the right!
