Club Carramar

Welcome to Club Carramar

Carramar Lighting was an Australian company based in Mt Gambier in South Australia that produced Lava lamps, Fibre Optic lamps and Touch lamps.

Carramar is famous for producing the Volcano Lava lamps.

Their Lava lamps were made with high quality heavy chromed bases and came in various wax colours that produced a great flow.

What was really unique about these Lava lamps was that the globe was indented in the base to house the light bulb within the bottle from the lamp base. The bottom of the lamp base was open and created a bright ring of light wherever the lamp was placed.

Sadly, Carramar went into liquidation, not much is known about this company and it appears its history has gone untold.

I would like to dedicate this page to the only Australian lava lamp company.

If you own a Carramar Lava lamp your pictures and thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I wish they still made these. So sad that Carramar is no longer around.

Definitely my favorite lava lamp now.

More interesting than the common mathmos shape, and extremely well made.

I'm sure most people are aware that the original style 30W bulbs are still available from PJ White and Co: https://www.pjwhite.com.au/ProductDisplay.aspx?Product=02558

However, I found a couple of alternatives.

For those people who have 25W lamps, you can use a 25W E27 ES 240v pgymgy bulb. I bought one here: http://www.meteorelectrical.com/lighting-lamps/lamps-and-tubes/25w-...

This bulb was just a couple of millimeters too long, so improvised with a skinny elastic hairband around the base of the bottle:

I also found a  40W E27 ES 240v pgymgy bulb, and managed to buy a couple of boxes of 10 via ebay (not yet able been able to find anymore though unfortunately):

I use these with a dimmer plug like this:

Recently purchased a red Volcano via ebay Australia (I'm in the UK) and hadn't really appreciated how difficult the bulbs were to get hold of.

Here's my lamp:

The last batch of Volcano's used the 25W reflector bulbs as the sticker on mine shows...
